To celebrate our Comedy Zone partnership at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, we’re inviting Festival fans to be inspired by the operatic ritual of the late Freddie Federici, whose performance continues to echo through the lifts at Lancemore Crossley Street.
It’s a moment of theatre. A touch of drama. And an invitation to interpret the ritual in your own expressive way, with warmth, creativity and a sense of fun.
One standout entry will win the ultimate Comedy Festival experience at Lancemore Crossley Street:
• Comedy Zone tickets for 10 people
• VIP access to Nightcap: Laughs with Lancemore
• An overnight stay in the Lancemore Crossley Street Penthouse for up to four guests, including breakfast
Plus, 20 additional Comedy Zone tickets will be awarded to other standout entries.
At Lancemore Crossley St., theatre is never far away. Just steps from the city’s historic performance district, the hotel sits in the shadow of the Princess Theatre, home to one of Melbourne’s most enduring stage legends.
In 1888, celebrated opera singer Frederick Federici was performing the role of Mephistopheles in Goethe’s Faust when he collapsed during the final act and died shortly after the curtain fell. Since that night, theatre folklore has long held that Federici’s presence lingers in the Princess Theatre, quietly watching over performances from the upper levels.
At Lancemore Crossley St., this story lives on through a contemporary artistic interpretation.
Inside the hotel’s lift you will find Federici 202, an audio visual work by Melbourne-based artist Roynae Mayes. The piece imagines a private moment before the curtain rises. Federici stands alone at the dressing room mirror, preparing to step on stage. Despite the strain of a heart condition, he resolves that the show must go on, drawing on the power of the character he is about to embody.
The work reflects the rituals performers undertake before stepping into the spotlight, and the strength we often summon in our own lives to rise to the occasion. Seen in the intimate space of the lift, the piece offers a fleeting but theatrical encounter, a quiet nod to the enduring spirit of performance in Melbourne’s theatre district.
